Planetary influences are central to astrology. A birth chart may contain twelve zodiac signs and twelve houses, but the Sun, Moon, and planets provide the main symbolic actors within that structure.

Astrologers commonly use a simple formula:

Planet: what function or theme is being expressed

Sign: how that function is expressed

House: where in life it is emphasized

Aspect: how it interacts with other chart factors

For example, Mars is traditionally associated with action, desire, conflict, and the pursuit of goals. Mars in Taurus is interpreted differently from Mars in Gemini because the signs describe different styles. Mars in the 2nd house is also interpreted differently from Mars in the 10th house because the houses describe different life areas. A square from Saturn can add another layer involving pressure, delay, control, discipline, or endurance.

The word influence requires care. In astrology, it usually refers to symbolic interpretation rather than a scientifically measured force flowing from a planet into a human personality.

Astronomy recognizes eight planets in the solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
