Historical Talismans from Africa

Africa’s historical talismans cannot be explained through one continental definition. The continent contains thousands of communities whose protective objects developed within different religious, political, medical, artistic, and family traditions.

The English words talisman, amulet, charm, medicine, and power object are museum and translation categories. They can be useful, but they do not always match the original names or meanings used by the people who created and used the objects.

Documented examples include portable amulets worn close to the body, written prayers enclosed in metal or leather cases, personalized Ethiopian healing scrolls, protective royal regalia, carved objects prepared by ritual specialists, and large community figures used in law, healing, protection, or collective welfare.

A responsible description should begin with the local or documented term whenever available, then explain why an English category is being used.

1. Merina Ody from Madagascar

Among Merina peoples of Madagascar, objects known as ody have been kept for protection and good fortune. A Metropolitan Museum example is a sculpted wooden head whose alert eyes and open mouth were interpreted as expressing vigilance and defensive readiness.

Ody should be discussed within Malagasy histories and institutions. The term should not be generalized to unrelated African communities.

2. Ethiopian Healing Scrolls

Ethiopian healing scrolls, known by terms including tälsäm or yä bərana kətab, combined written prayers with talismanic images. They were commonly prepared by a däbtära, a learned religious specialist associated with the Ethiopian Orthodox Christian tradition.

Museum examples show that scrolls could be personalized for an individual and worn or kept close to the body. Prayers and images were selected according to the client’s perceived needs; some examples also refer to zodiacal calculation.

The images do not have one universal fixed meaning. Their interpretation could vary by region and by the specialist preparing the scroll.

These scrolls belong to Ethiopian Christian histories, not a generic African magic system.

They combined prayer, healing, writing, imagery, and specialist knowledge.

The word magic may not accurately reflect how users understood prayer and divine protection.
