Rings Through History

Rings are among the most personal and durable forms of jewelry. They are worn directly on the body, easily displayed or concealed, and small enough to carry names, prayers, seals, gemstones, portraits, symbols, and private inscriptions.

Across history, rings have served many purposes: sealing documents, identifying officials, protecting the wearer, marking marriage, commemorating the dead, expressing religious devotion, displaying wealth, and declaring political or social membership.

The Metropolitan Museum describes finger rings as one of the oldest and most familiar forms of jewelry and notes that they have functioned as adornment, statements of status, markers of important life events, expressions of identity, and protective talismans.

Rings should not be assigned one universal meaning. A scarab ring in ancient Egypt, a Roman marriage ring, an Islamic inscribed ring, a medieval bishop's ring, a Jewish ceremonial wedding ring, an Asante gold ring, and a modern graduation ring belong to different institutions and histories.

The circular shape has often been interpreted as a symbol of eternity, but this explanation should not be applied automatically to every ancient ring. Practical design, available technology, fashion, social rank, and seal use were equally important.

1. Early Rings and Portable Seals

Some of the earliest rings developed from seals that were mounted, threaded, or attached so they could be carried on the body.

A seal served practical purposes:

Closing bags and containers

Marking ownership

Identifying an official

Protecting goods from tampering

Representing delegated authority

A ring-mounted seal was convenient because it remained attached to the owner's hand.

Signet rings later became major symbols of authority because an impressed design could function like a signature.

2. Ancient Egyptian Scarab and Signet Rings

Ancient Egyptian rings frequently combined adornment, sealing, protection, royal identity, and religious symbolism.

Scarab rings were especially important. A scarab could be mounted on a swivel so its engraved underside could be turned outward and pressed into clay.

The Metropolitan Museum documents scarab finger rings bearing royal names, including the names of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III. Such rings could seal documents or containers while also carrying associations with royal legitimacy and regeneration.

Tutankhamun's signet ring

A gold signet ring inscribed with Tutankhamun's throne name shows signs of repeated use as a seal, demonstrating that royal-name rings were functional objects rather than only ceremonial ornaments.

Protection and personal jewelry

Not every scarab ring was used as a seal. The Met records an uninscribed turquoise scarab swivel ring that was probably worn as a protective amulet or personal ornament.

Bes and childbirth protection

Another Egyptian signet ring includes figures of Bes, the protective deity associated with women in labor and young children. Museum interpretation suggests that the imagery may indicate ownership by a royal woman.
